Set following the deposition of Richard II by the current king, Henry IV Part I is unique in Shakespeare’s histories in that it explores both “kings and clowns” – political intrigue and tavern brawls stand as equals to one another in terms of significance and stage time. Prince Henry, the son of King Henry and next in line to the throne, appears to be more interested in reveling and thieving with his friend Falstaff and their ragtag crew than he is in assuming his princely duties. When dissatisfaction at court leads to civil war, the king summons him, and the prince is torn between the two worlds he simultaneously lives in. All this comes to a head on the battlefield, where the young prince proves his worth by saving his father’s life and defeating the rebellious Hotspur, thus setting the stage for him to become king, albeit two plays later.
